City Club Raleigh - Cigar Rolling & Whiskey Tasting

Learn about and taste various whiskeys at the Club! Our whiskey tasting is paired with a cigar rolling lesson, where you will learn to roll your own, and then smoke them outside the Club. This is a laid-back evening fit for our spirit enjoyers and cigar enthusiasts alike. We hope you join us! I started rolling cigars about eight years ago as a hobby. I’m a long time cigar smoker and thought it would be fun to learn. It took about two years to really get the process down and find a blend of tobacco that created a good smoke. I decided to make a business out of it about three years ago. I was speaking to an owner at a cigar shop in Cleveland while visiting family. I mentioned that I’ve been rolling my own cigars and he asked if I do events. He said he gets calls all the time from people looking for a cigar roller for weddings, etc. and no one is doing it around there. That was my light bulb moment. Rolling cigars starts with deveining the filler cigar leaves and bunching them together by hand. Once you have the mix of filler leaves bunched evenly, they are rolled in a binder leaf. The initial roll is then placed in a cigar mold and pressed in a vice. This is how cigars get their consistent shape. After a few hours in the mold, they’re ready for the wrapper leaf. This leaf cannot have any flaws since it’s the final layer of the cigar. The wrapper leaf is cut to size and shape and then cleanly rolled onto the cigar. A bermocoll cigar glue is used to seal the head of the cigar. The excess leaf is cut off and then a “flag” is cut out of the wrapper leaf. The flag additionally seals the head of the cigar and creates a clean look. A small circle is then cut on the leaf called the “cap”. The cap is the final piece to seal the cigar head. The cigar is then cut to size and is complete. $85++
